Mirra Andreeva Upsets Leylah Fernandez in Madrid Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez exited the Madrid Open clay-court tournament after a 7-6 (1), 6-3 defeat against ninth-seeded Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Andreeva managed to overturn three set points in the first set, eventually securing the tiebreak and taking control of the match. Fernandez, seeded 24th, encountered Andreeva for the third time, with the Russian now leading their head-to-head encounters 2-1.

Hailing from Laval, Quebec, Fernandez had advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Ann Li with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16. She became only the second Canadian to reach this stage in Madrid and equaled her best WTA 1000 performance. Andreeva, on the other hand, progressed to her inaugural Madrid semifinal and is set to face either top seed Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus or Hailey Baptiste from the United States.
