The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has announced the charging of a consultant for allegedly engaging in fraudulent overbilling of the federal government. Andrew McDermott, aged 62, along with his company, AM Government Consulting Inc., is facing two charges of fraud exceeding $5,000 each.
According to a press release from the RCMP, an investigation was initiated in 2021 by Public Services and Procurement Canada into a federal consultant involved in various contracts with Shared Services Canada managed by different private sector entities. The investigation revealed that the consultant had submitted falsified timesheets leading to overbilling spanning from May 2020 to June 2022.
Upon examining the evidence, the RCMP confirmed the consultant’s actions resulted in overbilling on multiple contracts with the government. Public Services and Procurement Canada disclosed that in 2024, they identified three subcontractors suspected of engaging in fraudulent billing practices, prompting the suspension of their security clearances.
