A man in Austria, identified as Beran A., admitted guilt in court for his involvement in a terrorist plot linked to the Islamic State group targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna in August 2024. The 21-year-old faced charges of terrorist activities and being part of a terrorist organization, potentially leading to a 20-year prison sentence. Beran A. and another individual, Arda K., had also planned attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 but did not carry them out.
Authorities discovered bomb-making materials in Beran A.’s apartment a day before the scheduled concert, prompting the cancellation of three of Swift’s shows as a precaution. The suspect aimed to harm a large crowd gathered outside the stadium using knives or homemade explosives. Intelligence provided by the U.S. contributed to the decision to call off the concerts.
Swift expressed her dismay over the cancellations, noting the impact on fans who had eagerly anticipated the performances. The incident drew parallels to a previous terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in 2017.
Arda K. also faces terrorism-related charges for the planned attacks in other countries, while a third individual involved in the scheme was detained in Saudi Arabia after allegedly stabbing a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Despite the elaborate plans, Beran A. and Arda K. did not carry out the attacks in Turkey and the U.A.E. before refocusing on the planned assault in Vienna.
