“Probe Launched into Waterfowl Poaching at Point Pelee”

Parks Canada is currently investigating a potential poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the marsh area of the park. Authorities are seeking information from individuals who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles during that time frame.

According to a statement released by the government agency, poaching is considered a serious violation under the Canada National Parks Act. Officials are particularly interested in receiving any dashcam footage captured at the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas during the specified period.

Debra Parker, a frequent visitor to Point Pelee, expressed her concern after learning about the incident. She mentioned that based on photos provided by a friend who witnessed a dead swan and reported it to park officials, it appeared to be a nesting female swan that was targeted. Parker emphasized the disturbing nature of the situation and hoped that the perpetrator would be apprehended soon.

Melissa Hargreaves, another park visitor, recalled observing the female swan peacefully tending to her nest the day before the incident. She described the swan’s behavior as calm and relaxed, highlighting the tranquility of the scene before the tragic event took place.

The community has been deeply affected by the poaching incident, with residents like Wallaceburg’s Larry Strung expressing sorrow and disbelief. Strung, an avid photographer, captured images of the swans at the park and was saddened by the harm inflicted on the nesting birds. He emphasized the beauty and grace of the swans, noting the impact of such actions on the ecosystem.

As the investigation continues, Parks Canada has refrained from disclosing specific details about the poached bird. Local residents and park enthusiasts are hopeful that the responsible party will be identified and face appropriate consequences for their actions.
