An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Highway 401 in Cobourg, Ontario. The OPP confirmed that the crash involved only the officer’s motorcycle.
The Northumberland detachment of the OPP responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash near Burnham Street North around 5:30 p.m. The officer, identified as 33-year-old Sgt. Brandon Malcolm by OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sgt. Malcolm, a dedicated member of the OPP’s Northumberland detachment in the Central Region, was on duty and traveling eastbound on Highway 401 at the time of the incident.
While authorities are not ruling out the involvement of another vehicle, there is currently no evidence to support this possibility. Commissioner Carrique expressed profound sadness over the loss, highlighting Sgt. Malcolm’s commitment to serving the community and his pride in being a member of the OPP’s Golden Helmets motorcycle team.
Following the initial crash, a secondary incident occurred involving other OPP officers traveling westbound on Highway 401. These officers collided with a vehicle driven by a motorist who had stopped to assist the fallen officer. Fortunately, the three officers involved in the secondary crash were taken to the hospital as a precaution and have since been discharged without any reported injuries.
Highway 401 was temporarily closed between Highway 28 and Burnham Street in Cobourg but has since reopened to traffic. The OPP continues to investigate both collisions, with support from the chief coroner’s office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed deep sorrow over the officer’s passing, extending his condolences to the officer’s family and all law enforcement personnel in the province. The OPP Association and Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw also offered their sympathies and support to the OPP and the fallen officer’s loved ones.
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information, including video or dashcam footage, to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
