“I Swear” Film Honors Tourette Syndrome Story

Kirk Jones had a simple goal when he embarked on creating the film, “I Swear.” It wasn’t about achieving blockbuster success or winning awards, even though the film has garnered significant box office earnings and surprised everyone by clinching three BAFTA Film Awards. The primary focus for Jones was to honor the story of John Davidson, the Scottish man at the heart of the movie.

The film explores Davidson’s journey from being diagnosed with Tourette syndrome in his childhood to facing social isolation and eventually gaining recognition for his efforts to educate the public about the condition. Through depicting the challenges Davidson faced due to the uncontrollable physical and verbal tics caused by Tourette syndrome, the film aims to highlight the lack of understanding surrounding the condition.

Jones received positive feedback on the film’s impact, including stories of a prison officer identifying Tourette syndrome in an inmate after watching the movie, and a young boy with the condition returning to soccer practice with newfound acceptance from his peers post-screening. The film’s release also led to a significant increase in website traffic for Tourette’s Action and a boost in donations for Tourette Scotland following the BAFTA wins.

Despite the film’s success, bringing it to completion was no easy feat for Jones. His journey began over 30 years ago when he first learned about Davidson from a documentary. Jones took a personal risk by self-financing the film, allowing him to maintain creative control and resulting in Robert Aramayo’s unexpected BAFTA win for his portrayal of Davidson.

However, the positive impact of the film was put to the test during the BAFTA ceremony when Davidson inadvertently uttered a racial slur, echoing the very struggles depicted in the movie. The incident sparked controversy, especially as the slur was initially not edited out of the broadcast, leading to criticism and apologies from various parties involved.

Despite the challenges faced, Jones believes that the film’s message of promoting understanding and compassion for conditions like Tourette syndrome remains paramount. He encourages viewers to watch “I Swear” to gain insight into the complexities of the condition and foster greater understanding in society.
