“Viennese Journalist Uncovers Grandfather’s Nazi Party Membership”

Christian Rainer, a journalist from Vienna, Austria, quickly confirmed his long-held suspicion that his grandfather was a member of the Nazi Party. By using a new online database, Rainer discovered that his grandfather, Franz Rainer, had joined the Nazi Party in 1938, shortly after Germany annexed Austria.

Despite knowing his family’s right-wing background and potential anti-Semitic views, Rainer was not surprised by the revelation. He had never met his grandfather, who passed away before his birth, and was relieved to find that his father was not listed in the database.

The online search tool, created by the German newspaper Die Zeit, provides access to millions of Nazi Party membership cards that were digitized and released by the U.S. National Archives in March. Prior to this, the information was only accessible through requests to the U.S. National Archives or the German Federal Archives.

The database, which requires a subscription but offers a free trial, allows users to search for specific individuals using various criteria such as name, date of birth, and birthplace. Since its launch, millions of people have utilized the database, sharing a range of emotions from relief to shock upon uncovering their family history.

Die Zeit reports that the database contains approximately 8.2 million names, representing about 90% of former Nazi Party members. However, there are some data gaps, and the newspaper cautions that results generated through artificial intelligence may be incomplete or contain errors.

Rainer encourages individuals to use the search tool to uncover hidden family histories, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and learning from the past. He stresses that understanding history is crucial in preventing its repetition, particularly in light of the resurgence of far-right ideologies globally.

As Austria continues to grapple with its Nazi past, Rainer highlights the need for honesty and vigilance in confronting historical truths. He underscores that the lessons of the past are relevant to all societies, cautioning that similar atrocities could occur anywhere, including in countries like Canada and the United States.
