Université de Montréal’s Carabins Win 60th Vanier Cup

The University of Saskatchewan’s Huskies had a chance to secure their first national championship in almost thirty years at the 60th Vanier Cup. The game took place in Regina’s Mosaic Stadium in front of nearly 9,000 spectators. This stadium is also home to the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, recent winners of the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg.

The game promised to be a memorable event, showcasing Saskatchewan’s football prowess and aiming to clinch the national title, a feat the team last achieved in 1998. However, it was not to be as the Université de Montréal’s Carabins emerged victorious, defeating the Huskies 30-16. This win marked the Carabins’ second Vanier Cup triumph in three years, solidifying their position as a powerhouse in Canadian football.

The Huskies, making their third national final appearance in five years, struggled throughout the game, trailing from the kickoff. The Carabins’ rookie quarterback, Pepe Gonzalez, played a pivotal role in dismantling the Huskies’ defense, securing the win, particularly in the second half.

Huskies’ quarterback Jake Farrell expressed disappointment at the loss, emphasizing the team’s resilience in the face of adversity throughout the season. The team rallied around Farrell, who took over the starting quarterback role from Anton Amundrud, diagnosed with lymphoma. The Huskies were determined to win the championship for their teammate.

Head coach Scott Flory commended his players for overcoming numerous challenges to reach the national stage. Despite the defeat, Flory highlighted the team’s achievements and the players’ fighting spirit.

Running back Ryker Frank credited the team’s unity as their greatest asset, underscoring the importance of camaraderie in their journey. For many players, including linebacker Seth Hundeby and receiver Daniel Wiebe, the game marked the end of their university careers. Despite the loss, they expressed gratitude for the experiences and camaraderie shared with their teammates.

Hundeby affirmed his ongoing support for the team, stating, “Once a Husky, always a Husky,” emphasizing his commitment to continuing to back his teammates. The game concluded the season for many players, but their dedication to the team remains unwavering.
