Three individuals from Dawson Creek were recently honored for their bravery during a harrowing black bear attack in northeast British Columbia in 2022. Leosette Canoy Hansen was awarded the Star of Courage, while Wennali Canoy and Adrian Bartolome received the Medal of Bravery from former Governor General Mary Simon earlier this year.
The incident occurred while the group was hiking the Bear Mountain ski trails at dusk on October 3, 2022, when a black bear attacked Analyn Bartolome. Despite the danger, the trio courageously fought back using whatever means they could find and sought assistance to save their friend.
The Governor General’s office highlighted that these bravery awards are bestowed upon individuals who risk their own lives to protect others. During a ceremony in Ottawa on March 26, Governor General Simon commended the trio for exemplifying the spirit of selfless protection and collaboration.
Following the attack, emergency responders arrived to find Hansen and Bartolome with severe injuries, necessitating immediate medical attention. The bear responsible for the attack was subsequently euthanized. Adrian, a relatively new resident in Canada, expressed gratitude for the choices made that night, emphasizing the instinct to protect loved ones when faced with danger.
Hansen, who shielded Bartolome during the attack, reflected on the emotional impact of the incident, noting the lasting scars on her hands. Despite the trauma, she continues to embrace her love for nature in Dawson Creek, albeit with a heightened awareness of the potential risks posed by wildlife.
The trio’s selfless actions were also acknowledged by Dawson Creek city councillors, with Mayor Darcy Dober praising their bravery and emphasizing the importance of their presence in the community. Hansen urges others to take precautions when venturing into the wilderness, underscoring the significance of preparedness in potentially hazardous environments.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of being vigilant in outdoor settings. The awards received by the trio are a testament to their courage and selflessness in the face of adversity.
