Canada’s Leylah Fernandez exited the French Open following a 6-4, 6-4 defeat in the first round against Alycia Parks of the United States. Despite being the 24th seed at Roland Garros, Fernandez struggled with her performance, conceding four breaks out of nine opportunities and committing seven double faults.
Parks faced challenges in accuracy, landing only 49.2% of her first serves in play. However, she compensated by winning 60% of her second-serve points. This loss marked Fernandez’s second consecutive first-round exit at the clay-court Grand Slam event. Her most notable achievement at Roland Garros remains reaching the quarterfinals in 2022.
The 23-year-old Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Quebec, suffered her second Grand Slam defeat to Parks, who had previously triumphed in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open. However, Fernandez had previously defeated Parks in their encounter at the second round of the 2025 Miami Open.
Other Canadian players in the French Open singles draws were scheduled to commence their opening matches on Tuesday. Men’s fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime from Montreal was set to play against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier; Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, was paired with Portugal’s Jaime Faria; and women’s ninth seed Victoria Mboko from Burlington, Ontario, was scheduled to face Czechia’s Nikola Bartunkova.
