Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought to utilize for his legal defense. Court documents revealed that Reiner had been attempting to claim allegedly unpaid funds from a trust set up by his parents in 1993.
Trustees denied Reiner’s request for the funds, invoking a California law provision known as the “slayer statute,” which prohibits individuals who have “feloniously and intentionally” killed someone from inheriting money, property, or trusts from the victim. The acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California home on December 14, 2025. Subsequently, their son Nick Reiner was taken into custody.
A grand jury indictment unsealed last Wednesday alleges that Reiner ambushed his parents before the attack, potentially subjecting him to the death penalty. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet determined whether to pursue this penalty. Reiner, aged 32, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.
The filing in June indicated that in addition to the main family trust fund, individual trust funds were established for each of the Reiner children. Nick Reiner was supposed to receive half of his trust at age 30 and the remainder at 35. He claimed in the petition that he did not receive the funds due to him at 30, asserting that the trustees were withholding money rightfully his.
High-profile attorney Alan Jackson initially represented Reiner but later departed without explanation. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later reversed their decision. The petition stated that the assets in the fund amounted to at least $1.5 million US.
The lawyer overseeing the trust fund and the incoming trustee concluded that the uncertain outcome of Reiner’s criminal case prevented the distribution of funds. The trust fund cannot be accessed until it is clear whether certain legal principles could impact Reiner’s claim to the funds.
As the legal proceedings continue, Jake Reiner, the eldest son, has shared his emotional turmoil following his parents’ tragic deaths and the ensuing focus on his brother’s alleged involvement. Rob Reiner, known for his prolific career in film, directed iconic movies like “The Princess Bride,” “A Few Good Men,” and “Stand By Me.” He and Michele were married for 36 years after meeting during the filming of “When Harry Met Sally.”
