Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial government has officially labeled gender-based violence as an epidemic. Lela Evans, the minister responsible for women and gender equality, expressed deep emotion as she addressed the press on Wednesday. She described the day as significant and announced the formation of a 12-member task force to address the issue, comprising government representatives and community advocates. The task force aims to deliver a report by fall, with the government commencing actions before the report’s completion.
Evans emphasized that this task force would not be a lengthy process, highlighting the urgency of the matter. The focus of the task force will be on providing recommendations to shift from crisis response to long-term prevention strategies. Evans stressed that the impact of gender-based violence is systemic and widespread, indicating that addressing the root cause is crucial for lasting solutions.
The task force will include advocates Georgina McGrath and Lisa Lake, who will bring their lived experiences to the forefront. McGrath, known for her advocacy against intimate partner violence (IPV), has proposed legislation alongside Sen. Fabian Manning for a national strategy on IPV. She expressed satisfaction with the government’s announcement, stating that she has long awaited such progress. McGrath hopes for new legislation on issues like strangulation and increased education on gender-based violence.
Lisa Lake, the mother of Courtney Lake who has been missing since 2017, also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the urgent need to combat violence against women. Evans reassured that the government would provide necessary resources to support stakeholders in this endeavor.
This initiative aligns with past efforts by previous governments to address gender-based violence. Evans emphasized the collaborative approach of the current task force and the commitment to act on recommendations. McGrath praised the positive outcomes of previous committees focusing on gender-based violence.
The government plans to launch a violence prevention awareness campaign this summer to promote awareness of warning signs and encourage open dialogue to cultivate a culture of respect. Premier Tony Wakeham conveyed a message of support to survivors, recognizing the widespread impact of gender-based violence on individuals, families, and communities.
Evans acknowledged the contributions of community partners in advocating for violence prevention initiatives. The government’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence was met with appreciation from various stakeholders.
