Maverick Bishop, a nine-year-old from Stratford, P.E.I., who has been awaiting a heart transplant in Toronto for the past 20 months, has finally returned home. Born with congenital heart disease, Maverick underwent five open-heart surgeries before turning five and was placed on the transplant list in September 2024. Following the successful transplant in January, he underwent rehabilitation and overcame several post-surgery challenges, leading to his clearance to return to the Island.
Expressing his joy after a surprise party welcoming him home, Maverick shared his excitement to reunite with his friends and return to school. His mother, Marie-Eve Roy, highlighted the family’s near two-year stay near Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, awaiting the donor heart, and emphasized Maverick’s eagerness to resume a normal life and play with his friends.
With immense gratitude for the support received from P.E.I. and across Canada, Maverick’s father, Woodrow Bishop, praised his son’s dedication to rehabilitation. Reflecting on the emotional journey, Woodrow described the heartwarming welcome home party as a significant surprise, expressing the family’s pride in Maverick’s progress and achievements post-surgery.
The Bishop family’s story has brought attention to the importance of organ donation, with a plea to lower the age limit for donor registration, as currently set at 16 in the province. The family’s journey of hope, resilience, and community support culminated in Maverick’s successful homecoming, symbolizing a new chapter of health and happiness for the young boy.
