Following a shooting incident at a busy food festival near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, authorities have apprehended one suspect and are actively searching for another. The altercation resulted in three fatalities and left four individuals wounded, including a young child.
According to Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis, the two suspects engaged in gunfire with each other. Although one suspect remains at large, Davis assured the public during a press briefing on Sunday night that there is no immediate danger to the community. A detailed description of the outstanding suspect is not currently available.
Davis stated, “We are still piecing together the sequence of events.” Two individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while a third passed away at a medical facility. The four injured victims, including a two-year-old boy, are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition, as confirmed by Grace Nuñez, a spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department. The remaining injured parties are adults, and it is uncertain if any of them were directly involved in the altercation.
The gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. local time towards the end of the Bite of Seattle festival, an annual event that attracts numerous food and retail vendors, as well as performers.
Multiple law enforcement officers were present at the festival providing security, and some witnessed one of the suspects discharging a firearm, as per Davis. Although one suspect surrendered on-site, the other evaded capture. Authorities conducted an extensive search of the premises, but the suspect remained at large.
A significant number of police and emergency responders swiftly reacted to the situation and initiated the evacuation of the area surrounding the sprawling Seattle Center campus.
Seeking Refuge at a Museum
An eyewitness, Faith Adia Hunter, recounted that she and her companions had just purchased food from a crepe vendor when the gunfire erupted. Realizing the proximity of the shooter, they sought refuge at the nearby Seattle Children’s Museum along with other festival attendees.
Hunter described, “We were in close proximity to the shooter when the incident began, prompting us to flee. We ran into the building along with the crowd.”
In the ensuing chaos, many vendors hurried towards the exits, abandoning their food stalls. Subsequently, some vendors gathered outside the police cordons, awaiting permission to retrieve their equipment, food inventory, and cooking supplies.
Roberto Ramirez, a vendor at the event, recalled hearing what sounded like firecrackers before chaos ensued with people shouting about a shooter and hastily evacuating the area.
“Suddenly, the entire place was deserted,” Ramirez stated. “People were in a state of panic.”
Following the initial commotion, new attendees continued to arrive, unaware of the unfolding events, and were instructed by law enforcement to vacate the premises, according to Ramirez.
Estan Wakonabo shared his experience of being at the festival with his girlfriend, waiting in line for a photo booth when a surge of people started fleeing, pushing him from behind. He witnessed individuals taking cover, pushing each other, and even falling to the ground, including baby strollers.
Wakonabo recalled, “When I heard the distinctive sound of gunshots, ‘pop, pop, pop,’ I realized it was a shooting incident.”
