Former neurologist Jeffrey Sloka, previously acquitted of numerous sexual assault charges, now faces two additional counts of sexual assault dating back to 2011 and 2013. The complainants, whose identities remain confidential due to a publication ban, allege separate incidents during the specified years.
The recent charges emerged following a notice of appeal filed by Crown prosecutors challenging Justice Craig Parry’s decision to clear Sloka of 48 previous counts of sexual assault. The Crown seeks a retrial and aims to overturn the acquittals.
The allegations against Sloka surfaced in 2017 during his medical practice, which led to the revocation of his medical license by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in 2019. Testimonies during the trial indicated that Sloka requested patients to disrobe for unnecessary physical examinations, including breast and pelvic exams. Sloka defended himself by either denying the allegations or justifying the actions as medically necessary.
Sara Casselman, the executive director of the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, highlighted the significant impact of Sloka’s trial on the community. The ongoing legal proceedings have garnered widespread attention and concern within the community, emphasizing the importance of addressing such issues.
Sloka’s next court appearance is scheduled for the end of July.
