Sony Pictures announced on Monday that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set a new North American opening weekend record by grossing $360 million in ticket sales across the U.S. and Canada. Initially forecasted to earn $355 million during its first weekend in 4,487 theaters, the film starring Tom Holland surpassed expectations with a strong Sunday performance, surpassing the previous record held by “Avengers: Endgame.”
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating that while records are meant to be broken, they will cherish this one. Prior to “Avengers: Endgame,” no movie had exceeded $300 million in domestic opening weekend revenue. Previous record-holders were “Avengers: Infinity War” with $257 million in 2018 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $247 million in 2015.
The successful debut of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” alongside “The Odyssey,” featuring the same cast members Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, contributed to a record-breaking weekend for theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The film challenges viewers with a darker tone as Spider-Man navigates a complex web of self-identity and crime-fighting in New York.
Rentrak, a box-office analytics company, reported that the domestic box office has seen a significant increase of over 15% compared to the previous year, accumulating more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales so far.
