A 17-year-old from Brockville, Ontario faces charges in connection with the tragic deaths of a mother and her two teenage daughters, with authorities labeling the incident as a case of intimate partner violence. The Brockville Police were alerted to the situation by a call on Thursday morning at a residence on Cartier Court, where the bodies of a 49-year-old woman and her daughters, aged 17 and 15, were discovered, shared Insp. Darryl Boyd during a press briefing on Friday. According to Boyd, a knife is believed to have been used in the incident.
Following leads, officers located the teenager at a different location on the outskirts of the city and took him into custody. Boyd mentioned that the teen had a relationship with one of the daughters, indicating the involvement of intimate partner violence and characterizing the killings as femicide. The young individual, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, made a court appearance on Friday and faces three counts of first-degree murder, as well as an additional charge of assaulting a police officer during the arrest.
While investigations are ongoing, Boyd assured that there is no further danger to the community, stating, “We have no indication or any information at this point that there are any other targets or victims.” The community of Brockville, with a population of 23,000 along the St. Lawrence River, has been deeply affected by the tragic events, leading to flags being lowered at city facilities as a mark of respect. Chief Mark Noonan expressed the community’s devastation, while Brockville Mayor Matt Wren described the incident as an unspeakable tragedy where three women were killed in what should have been their safest place.
Recognizing the sensitivity and complexity of the investigation, Brockville Police emphasized their awareness of the profound impact on families, loved ones, and the community. Premier Doug Ford also acknowledged the tragedy during a news conference in Smiths Falls, offering full support to the local police as they handle the situation. School Superintendent Kellie Weir of the Upper Canada District School Board assured the provision of additional resources for staff and students, which will be available for as long as necessary. The teen is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 28.
