Trial Reveals Shocking Allegations of Child Abuse

WARNING: This article contains allegations of child abuse.

The lead investigator from the Halton Police in the case involving Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney testified at their trial for first-degree murder. Sgt. Julie Powers presented evidence collected by the police, including photos, videos, and messages from electronic devices seized from the accused in 2023 related to the attempted adoption of two boys.

During the investigation, it was noted that pictures on the couple’s devices showed a decrease in the presence of the older boy, L.L., over the years. Testimony revealed that the younger boy, J.L., testified about his limited interactions with L.L. before his passing.

For privacy reasons, the brothers are identified as L.L. and J.L. L.L. tragically passed away in December 2022 while in the care of Hamber and Cooney. The women have pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, confinement, assault with a weapon, and failure to provide necessities for J.L.

According to the prosecution, Hamber and Cooney are accused of mistreating and neglecting the children. Witnesses described finding L.L. in a severely malnourished state before his untimely death.

Throughout the trial, various professionals, including medical experts, teachers, and therapists, have provided testimony. The court also heard about the boys’ living conditions, including the use of wetsuits and zip ties, which were presented as evidence.

Notably, the defense argued that the couple did their best to care for the children, who reportedly had behavioral issues and required specialized attention.

Further revelations during the trial detailed the attempts made by Hamber and Cooney to delete incriminating evidence, including footage from surveillance cameras and text messages.

Audio recordings played in court depicted instances of verbal abuse towards L.L., with the women using derogatory language and engaging in contentious interactions with the boys.

The ongoing trial is expected to continue with additional testimonies, shedding more light on the events leading to L.L.’s tragic demise.
