Tragic Polar Bear Encounter Claims Photographer’s Life

Christopher Best reassured his family about the photos he was capturing of polar bears while working at a radar site in Nunavut. His mother, Shelly Cox, mentioned that he had casually mentioned to his stepfather that the bears were not in close proximity shortly before his tragic encounter with a bear on August 8, 2024.

According to a report by Nasittuq Corporation, the operator of North Warning System sites, including the one on Brevoort Island off the eastern coast of Baffin Island, Best, aged 34, ventured outside with his camera after being informed of a nearby bear. Unfortunately, surveillance footage revealed that Best was unaware of a second bear in the vicinity, which ultimately led to the fatal attack.

Cox believes that the incident could have been avoided with the implementation of safety measures like fences and motion-sensor monitors with alarms at radar sites. The report highlighted that there had been no bear-related fatalities or injuries in the seven decades of operation of the North Warning System and its predecessor, the DEW Line, until Best’s tragic demise.

Best, who had a background in various jobs and a passion for photography, was waiting for security clearance to begin logistics work at the radar site. Before the incident, he and other crew members had encountered a bear while cleaning fuel tanks at the site.

The report suggested enhancements to safety protocols, such as requiring workers to seek permission before going outside after-hours and making public announcements when bears are present. It also called for improved training on polar bear awareness and the installation of fencing in certain areas of the camp.

Employment and Social Development Canada stated that their report on the incident was pending completion and emphasized the importance of federally regulated employers ensuring the health and safety of their employees. Nasittuq Corporation expressed condolences and stated their inability to comment until the federal report is finalized.

Best’s belongings, including his camera and the SD card with his photos, were eventually returned to his mother, who continues to seek closure by uncovering all possible details surrounding the tragic event.
