“Toronto’s Waste Incineration Debate: Sustainability Solutions”

Welcome to our weekly newsletter showcasing environmental trends and solutions driving us towards a more sustainable world.

Last week, an Instagram post on Toronto’s waste incineration plans prompted thoughts on its viability amid the trash disposal dilemma.

This week’s focus includes Toronto’s waste disposal considerations, the significant water usage in big data centers, and how sprinklers protect homes from wildfires.

In North America, landfilling is the common practice for waste disposal. Despite advancements in landfill engineering, Toronto faces a disposal crisis with its main landfill nearing capacity by 2035. Seeking alternatives, the city proposed waste incineration after neighboring municipalities rejected hosting landfills. Yet, indigenous communities near the landfill site oppose its expansion due to existing pollution issues.

Toronto’s waste survey included public opinions on incineration, with existing examples nearby in Brampton and the Durham region. The Durham facility, currently handling 140,000 tons yearly, plans to expand to 250,000 tons.

Debates continue on emissions comparisons between landfills and incinerators. Proponents argue that energy-from-waste facilities, like the one in Durham, yield lower greenhouse gas emissions than landfills. However, critics advocate for methane capture at landfills as a more eco-friendly option.

In addition to emissions, air quality concerns arise from incinerator expansions. Peel Public Health highlighted potential health risks from toxic pollutants, emphasizing the need for sustainable waste solutions beyond incineration.

Efforts to address waste challenges should prioritize waste reduction strategies like producer responsibility programs and enhancing diversion rates for recyclable waste. These sustainable approaches aim to minimize waste generation rather than resorting to expensive disposal methods like incineration.
