“Taylor Swift Faces Trademark Lawsuit Over Album”

A legal claim alleges that Taylor Swift’s album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” has infringed upon the branding of a real showgirl’s work. Maren Wade has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit in U.S. federal court in California, asserting that Swift’s 2025 album’s glittery style closely resembles her own creation, “Confessions of a Showgirl.”

Wade, known as a singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer, originally penned a column titled “Confessions of a Showgirl” for the Las Vegas Weekly in 2014, which later evolved into a live show taken on a national tour. The lawsuit contends that both works share a similar structure, dominant phrase, and commercial impression, targeting overlapping markets and consumers.

Taylor Swift’s twelfth studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” was released in October 2025, selling four million copies in its debut week. The album cover features Swift in Las Vegas cabaret attire, submerged in water, with an orange and mint green color scheme. Following the lawsuit filing, Swift released a music video for the track “Elizabeth Taylor,” incorporating archival footage of the late Hollywood icon.

The lawsuit alleges “textbook reverse confusion,” where the junior user’s extensive commercial presence eclipses the senior user’s mark, leading consumers to view the original as an imitation. Defendants named in the lawsuit include Swift’s trademark management company, record label, and merchandising arm. The legal action seeks to permanently prevent the use of the “Life of a Showgirl” name and imagery by Swift and her entities, along with seeking monetary damages, including profits linked to the brand’s use.
