With only a few recorded instances of sperm whale births over the past six decades, mostly anecdotal or documented from whaling vessels, this recent observation stands out.

In a study recently published in the journal Science, researchers documented this extraordinary event, analyzing drone footage that revealed collaborative efforts among both related and unrelated sperm whales to aid newborns during their critical early moments. This cooperative behavior emphasizes the strong social bonds within sperm whale groups, showcasing a unique aspect of their communal interactions.

During an expedition on July 8, 2023, off the coast of Dominica, researchers studying whale communication witnessed a group of 11 whales, predominantly females, engaging in unusual behavior. The whales surfaced with their heads facing each other, exhibiting frantic movements above and below the water. Subsequently, drones and microphones were deployed to record the entire birthing process, which lasted approximately 30 minutes.

Following the birth, the researchers observed pairs of whales supporting the calf above the water, demonstrating a collective effort to ensure the newborn’s well-being. This event left a lasting impression on the scientists, highlighting the significance of such rare and intimate moments in the lives of sperm whales.

Post-birth analysis led to the development of software to dissect the observed behaviors further. The researchers noted the involvement of multiple generations of female whales, both related and unrelated, in assisting the newborn calf. This observation underscores the cohesive and supportive nature of sperm whale social structures, particularly during crucial life events.

The researchers also noted distinct vocalizations and communication patterns among the whales during the birthing process, as detailed in a subsequent report published in Scientific Reports. These sound patterns, akin to Morse code, possibly facilitated coordination among the whales during the birth and may have served as a form of celebration following the successful delivery.
