A man from South Korea is currently cycling across North America from British Columbia to Montreal, with the support of kind-hearted Canadians. Seongmin Ji, dressed in black with a navy blue toque, may seem like an ordinary cyclist navigating the Sea to Sky Highway from Whistler to Vancouver. However, his bicycle stands out due to the various license plates attached to it, including ones from Alaska, Utah, Guatemala, and B.C., acquired through the generosity of locals.
At 28 years old, Ji has already cycled the entire west coast of South America, Central America, and North America. His current goal is to pedal over 5,000 kilometers to Montreal in a span of two months, aiming to have fun, explore his limits, and inspire others. Starting his journey in Ushuaia, Argentina, Ji cycled to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, then hitchhiked to Kitwanga, B.C., before cycling down to Squamish and planning to head to Washington next.
Upon arriving in Canada, Ji has been relying on the hospitality of strangers who have opened their homes to him. Using the Warm Showers website, which connects touring cyclists with locals, Ji has been able to find shelter, showers, and laundry facilities during his journey. He expressed appreciation for the warmth and generosity of people in British Columbia, as well as the beauty of nature and clean water.
During his stay in Smithers, B.C., Ji was hosted by Rory Luxmoore and his family, leaving a lasting impression with his maturity and passion. Luxmoore admired Ji’s humility and peaceful demeanor despite his remarkable accomplishments. Ji also joined a local cycling group in Smithers, further integrating himself into the community.
Inspired by the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Ji found the people of B.C. to be welcoming and particularly fond of bicycles, especially mountain bikes. His daily sustenance consists of podcasts and peanut-butter sandwiches, keeping him fueled throughout his journey. When faced with challenging climbs or physical discomfort, Ji draws strength from the memory of those who have aided him and looks up to Canadian hero Terry Fox.
Ji’s ultimate goal is to return to South Korea and run the entirety of the country for a cancer charity. His cross-continental cycling adventure is not only about personal growth but also about spreading positivity and gratitude for the kindness he has encountered along the way.
