“Scott Pilgrim EX: New Video Game Expands Franchise Fun”

Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley claims he doesn’t have a grand plan in mind. However, recent projects based on his popular creation, Scott Pilgrim, may suggest otherwise. O’Malley expressed that if he were 12 years old, he would aspire to create a movie, anime, and video game. Now, two decades after the release of “Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life,” the first installment in the series, he has achieved all of those aspirations and more.

The newest addition is “Scott Pilgrim EX,” the second video game featuring the music-loving nerd who previously battled his girlfriend’s seven evil exes in a whimsical portrayal of Toronto. This release signifies more than just a sequel for O’Malley and indie developer Tribute Games. Many team members had previously collaborated on the initial game while employed at Ubisoft. O’Malley described it as an opportunity to revisit unfinished concepts and ideas that were left unexplored in the first iteration.

“Scott Pilgrim EX” introduces a fresh storyline where an evil robot clone of Scott abducts members of the band Sex Bob-Omb. Scott, along with his girlfriend Ramona and other characters, embarks on a mission to rescue their friends. While the game’s plot may not match the depth of the original comic, it offers engaging gameplay focused on combat rather than intricate coming-of-age narratives. Players can assume the roles of Scott, Ramona, or various other series characters, engaging in battles against gang members, miscreants, and robots while fulfilling side quests from supporting characters across Toronto.

The game features a nonlinear structure reminiscent of the 1989 title “River City Ransom,” allowing players to traverse the city, revisiting familiar locations and unlocking access to new ones as they accompany Scott and his friends on their adventure.

Although “Scott Pilgrim EX” retains visuals inspired by O’Malley’s original comic, it also incorporates aesthetic elements from Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action film and the 2023 Netflix anime adaptation, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.” O’Malley, who served as a consultant for the game, mentioned that while it draws from various iterations of Scott Pilgrim, its primary aim is to provide a fun and accessible gaming experience.

The game immerses players in a fictionalized rendition of Toronto, featuring recognizable landmarks and neighborhoods modeled after their real-life counterparts. Some locations exhibit fantastical elements due to a time-travel component within the game, offering unique twists to iconic locales.

“Scott Pilgrim EX,” like Tribute Games’ recent releases, predominantly adopts the format of a classic beat-’em-up game, requiring players to combat waves of enemies in a two-dimensional setting and face formidable bosses. The studio, known for its retro-style games crafted with two-dimensional pixel art, drew inspiration from classic fighting games to enhance the beat-’em-up experience, introducing gameplay mechanics familiar to fighting game enthusiasts.

The game’s combat system includes light and strong attacks, a power meter for executing super moves, and various grappling techniques tailored to each character’s fighting style. By incorporating real-world martial arts and associating them with specific characters, the team aimed to create a diverse and engaging gameplay experience.

“Scott Pilgrim EX” holds special significance for Tribute Games’ veteran developers, who previously worked on the original 2011 Scott Pilgrim game. Unlike the first game, which faced production challenges and modifications due to relocation, “Scott Pilgrim EX” aligns more closely with the team’s original vision for a Scott Pilgrim video game, allowing them to realize their initial aspirations fully.

In essence, “Scott Pilgrim EX” serves as a redemption of sorts for the development team, enabling them to deliver a game that encapsulates their original intentions and bids a proper farewell to the beloved franchise.
