“Scarborough Priest Saves Church Food Bank by Moving It to Garage”

When renovations at a Scarborough church food bank threatened its closure, the priest, Rev. Gerlyn Henry, took action by relocating it to her own garage.

Understanding the importance of the food bank to its clients, Henry emphasized that it has become a crucial lifeline rather than just an emergency service.

Many of the food bank clients are members of the community with whom Henry has personal connections. She expressed concerns about their well-being if the food bank were to cease operations.

After receiving support from her spouse and other residents, Henry cleared out her garage to create a space for the food bank to continue serving its clients.

Operating out of the makeshift location for about six months, the food bank, led by a dedicated team of volunteers, serves approximately 300 people on a weekly basis.

Linda Luciani, a volunteer at the food bank, highlighted the importance of staying close to the original location to ensure accessibility for those who rely on the service.

Henry had to reassure her neighbors about the relocation, explaining that most food bank visitors are local community members.

A community asset

According to Suman Roy, CEO of Feed Scarborough, neighborhood food banks play a vital role in supporting communities, offering essential resources that help prevent individuals from turning to negative paths.

Roy emphasized the challenges faced by many food banks, including high demand and limited resources, making it difficult to secure affordable operating spaces.

Henry’s gesture of hosting the church food bank in her garage is a testament to the challenges faced by food bank operators, according to Roy.

Anticipated to conclude in the summer of 2026, the church renovations will allow the food bank to return to its original location within the Church of the Holy Wisdom.
