Toy-maker Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced plans to create a feature film based on the viral ugly-cute monster, Labubu. The Chinese company aims to expand its popular collectible toy sensation into an international entertainment franchise. Paul King, known for films like “Paddington” and “Wonka,” will produce and direct the movie, which will be a live-action and CGI hybrid. Labubu’s popularity has significantly boosted Pop Mart’s market value, surpassing competitors like Hasbro and Mattel. The partnership with Sony Pictures is seen as a strategic move to diversify revenue streams. Created by artist Kasing Lung, Labubu is part of “The Monsters Trilogy” and is currently on a global tour to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
