“PM Mark Carney Honors Louis Riel in Historic Gesture”

Prime Minister Mark Carney paid tribute to Louis Riel by laying a wreath at his grave in Winnipeg to mark the 140th anniversary of the Red River Métis leader’s execution. It was noted as the first instance of a sitting prime minister attending the annual commemoration ceremony, as mentioned by Manitoba Métis Federation Housing Minister Will Goodon. David Chartrand, President of the Manitoba Métis Federation and the head of the Red River Métis’ national government, emphasized the significance of Carney’s presence at the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery alongside dignitaries from various government levels.

Chartrand expressed that Louis Riel would have felt honored by the prime minister’s gesture, highlighting Riel’s belief that one day the country would recognize his contributions. Riel’s historical significance stems from leading two Métis resistances in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, advocating for Métis rights and culture. At the age of 41, Riel was executed for treason in 1885 in Regina.

Carney, in his address at the gravesite, hailed Louis Riel as a foundational figure in the histories of Manitoba and Canada. He emphasized the importance of Riel’s legacy in uniting and reconciling Canada’s history. The prime minister pledged his government’s commitment to honoring Riel’s legacy by engaging in reconciliation efforts with Indigenous communities.

Premier Wab Kinew, who played a key role in recognizing Riel as Manitoba’s first honorary premier, expressed pride in Carney’s attendance at the ceremony. Kinew highlighted the significance of the prime minister’s presence, noting the stark contrast to the historical context where Riel faced opposition from the prime minister of the time. Kinew emphasized that Riel’s legacy lives on and continues to resonate in contemporary times.
