An individual from Ontario completed a remarkable journey by cycling 30,000 kilometers around the globe to raise funds for cancer research in memory of his deceased wife. Mark Herbst, aged 69 and residing east of Bracebridge, Ontario, traveled through 25 countries over the course of 11 months to honor Jackie Herbst, who passed away in December 2021 due to squamous cell cancer. During this journey, he managed to collect approximately $50,000 for the University Health Network’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
Mark Herbst successfully concluded his expedition in Toronto after starting from Bangkok on January 7. Describing himself as a competitive individual, he embarked on this challenging bike trip to find purpose in his daily life and pay tribute to his late wife’s spirit, whom he described as his greatest supporter and everything to him. Herbst highlighted their mutual love for life and continuous smiles during their time together.
Throughout his cycling adventure, Herbst felt his wife’s presence and documented his experiences on social media. The journey lasted 324 days, involving occasional bike disassembly for air travel between countries. Upon validation completion, Herbst anticipates setting the Guinness World Record as the oldest person to circumnavigate the globe via bicycle.
Although the logistical aspects of the trip presented challenges, with daily planning for accommodations and routes, Herbst expressed gratitude for the immense support received from people along his journey. Despite enduring repetitive tasks in adverse weather conditions and unfamiliar territories, he encountered numerous kind-hearted individuals who offered assistance and encouragement. Noteworthy instances include strangers providing accommodations and driving long distances to deliver replacement bike parts when needed.
Upon returning home briefly in July for a triathlon group anniversary celebration, Herbst shared his plans to engage in different physical activities and work on a book project. His friend Barrie Shepley, an Olympic coach and supporter, expressed immense pride and relief at Herbst’s successful completion of the arduous journey, drawing parallels to his own loss to cancer. Shepley commended Herbst’s resilience and determination throughout the challenging expedition, emphasizing the profound significance of his accomplishment.
