Education Minister Paul Calandra has issued a warning to an Ontario school board that if it doesn’t reinstate prom plans for three high schools that recently canceled the events, he will intervene to ensure they take place. The decision to cancel proms at three schools in the Durham District School Board was made by the principals due to escalating liabilities and risks associated with organizing the events.
Students expressed frustration and disappointment over not being able to partake in the traditional celebration, which prompted Minister Calandra to address the issue in the legislature. He emphasized the importance of the prom as a significant milestone for students to commemorate their achievements in a safe manner, urging school boards to prioritize students’ interests when making decisions.
Calandra stressed the need for school boards to consider the well-being of students and educators in their choices, advocating for a student-centric approach. He highlighted the significance of allowing students to enjoy their youth and indicated his readiness to intervene if necessary to prioritize student welfare.
Legislation currently under review in the legislature would grant the Minister expanded powers, potentially enabling intervention in school board matters, including the organization of proms. The Durham District School Board has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
In a joint letter to parents earlier this month, the principals of Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools within the Durham board explained their decision to cancel proms, assuring that alternative year-end activities focusing on safety, inclusivity, and unity would be organized to recognize students’ achievements and foster a sense of community.
