Joe Thornton has always been known for his unique approach both on and off the ice. The prominent forward, nicknamed “Jumbo Joe,” stood out with his larger-than-life presence, exceptional vision, soft hands, and infectious smile since he burst onto the NHL scene at 18. Recently, Thornton was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class, which also included Zdeno Chara, Duncan Keith, Alexander Mogilny, Jennifer Botterill, Brianna Decker, Jack Parker, and Danièle Sauvageau.

Beginning his NHL journey as the first overall pick by the Boston Bruins in 1997, Thornton’s career truly flourished after joining the San Jose Sharks. During his 14 seasons in California, he clinched the scoring title and Hart Trophy for league MVP in 2005-06. Thornton notably led the NHL in assists for three consecutive seasons, a feat achieved by only two other players in history. In an emotional speech, Thornton reminisced about his lifelong dedication to hockey and his unwavering passion for the sport.

Noteworthy achievements in Thornton’s career include leading San Jose in scoring eight times, contributing to the Sharks’ 2016 Stanley Cup final appearance, and earning Olympic gold with Team Canada in 2010. With a remarkable 1,539 points in 1,714 regular-season games, Thornton retired as the 12th highest scorer in NHL history, ranking seventh in assists and sixth in games played. His impact extended beyond statistics, leaving a lasting impression on teammates like Auston Matthews, who praised Thornton’s unparalleled character and friendship.

Zdeno Chara, another Hall of Fame inductee, embarked on his NHL journey after being selected by the New York Islanders in 1996. His career soared after joining the Boston Bruins, where he spent 14 seasons, serving as captain throughout. Chara’s tenure with Boston included a Stanley Cup victory in 2011 and two additional final appearances. The towering defenseman, standing at six-foot-nine, also excelled internationally, competing in multiple Olympics and world championships.

Duncan Keith, a veteran of 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, secured three Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015. The Winnipeg native, who also won Olympic gold with Team Canada, emphasized the collective effort required to achieve success in hockey. Jennifer Botterill, a decorated Canadian Olympian, highlighted the joy and passion she brought to the sport throughout her career, earning numerous accolades and championships.

Brianna Decker, a gold medalist at the 2018 Olympics, expressed her gratitude for the opportunities and friendships hockey provided her. Danièle Sauvageau, the first female builder inducted into the Hall of Fame, reflected on her pioneering journey in Canadian hockey. Jack Parker, recognized for his coaching excellence at Boston University, and Alexander Mogilny, a standout player with an impressive NHL career, were also celebrated in the 2025 Hall of Fame class.
