“Nathan Rourke Wins Top CFL Honors”

Nathan Rourke shined at the CFL awards ceremony, with the West Division dominating the accolades on Thursday evening. The B.C. Lions’ quarterback clinched the George Reed Trophy for the CFL’s outstanding player and was also crowned the top Canadian at Club Regent Casino. Rourke now joins a select group of players, including Brady Oliveira, Jon Cornish, Russ Jackson, and Tony Gabriel, who have achieved both distinctions in the same season.

Expressing his gratitude, Rourke acknowledged the legendary status of the players before him and the significance of upholding the CFL’s traditions as a Canadian athlete. Trey Vaval of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers also made a mark by securing two awards: top rookie and special-teams player. Other individual winners included B.C.’s Mathieu Betts for defensive player and Jermarcus Hardrick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for outstanding lineman.

The winners were determined through a voting process involving the Football Reporters of Canada and all nine CFL head coaches, with a total of 53 ballots cast. Noteworthy mentions were Logan Ferland of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who received the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Trophy, and Andrew Peirson of the B.C. Lions, who claimed the Tom Pate Memorial Award for his sportsmanship and community contributions.

Rourke, hailing from Victoria, showcased stellar performances during the season, setting career highs in various categories such as passing yards, touchdowns, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns. Under his leadership, the B.C. Lions excelled offensively, leading the CFL in points per game, net yards, and passing yards. Despite a strong finish in the regular season and a victory over Calgary in the Western semifinal, B.C.’s journey ended with a loss to Saskatchewan in the subsequent game.

Reflecting on the season, Rourke expressed his desire to have played in the Grey Cup, emphasizing that individual awards pale in comparison to team success. Saskatchewan is now gearing up to face the Montreal Alouettes in the upcoming Grey Cup showdown on Sunday.
