Los Angeles celebrated the 1,000-day countdown to its inaugural Paralympic Games by revealing the preliminary competition timetable for the 2028 event. The LA28 organizing committee announced that the Games would encompass 23 sports and 560 medal events spread over 294 sessions, carefully crafted in collaboration with international federations and Olympic Broadcasting Services to ensure a balance between athlete well-being and global broadcast opportunities.
Ileana Rodriguez, LA28’s vice president of Paralympic strategy and relations, expressed the significance of Los Angeles hosting its first Paralympic Games and emphasized the committee’s dedication to tailoring the competition schedule to meet the needs of the athletes and global viewers. The focus is on creating a memorable and inclusive experience for all involved.
Mayor Karen Bass highlighted that the city is gearing up to host its debut Paralympic Games with a record number of female athletes participating on the global stage. The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for August 15, 2028, at SoFi Stadium, followed by the closing ceremony on August 27 at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The inaugural Paralympic champions in Los Angeles will be crowned on the first day in various sports such as Para athletics, wheelchair fencing, shooting Para sport, Para equestrian, and Para track cycling. Para climbing will make its Paralympic debut with four days of competition starting from Day 9, while wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball will incorporate extended formats including play-in rounds.
Further details and a comprehensive event schedule, specifying each competition, are anticipated to be released in 2026.
