Justice Minister Sean Fraser emphasized the importance of global unity and respect at the Halifax International Security Forum. During a panel discussion, Fraser indirectly addressed U.S. president Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about Canada, which had stirred anger among Canadians across the political spectrum.
Fraser highlighted the negative impact of disrupting the longstanding trading relationship between Canada and the U.S., cautioning against damaging long-term ties for short-term political gain. He warned against catering to a narrow segment of the electorate, as it could empower future populist leaders and erode societal norms and rights.
The panel, titled “Democracies Demand Decency,” featured Fraser, Rushan Abbas from the Campaign for Uyghurs, and Colombia’s Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez. U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer also participated, expressing disapproval of a video shown at the forum that portrayed Trump negatively. Cramer criticized the video as inappropriate and unrepresentative of the political landscape in the U.S.
The discussion touched on global issues such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the treatment of Uyghurs in China, and terrorism in Nigeria. Cramer advocated for increased U.S. AID funding and emphasized the importance of aid in fostering international relationships.
Fraser stressed the need for political civility and the preservation of democratic values. He underscored the role of independent media and the judiciary in promoting informed public discourse and combating misinformation. The panel concluded with a call for respectful dialogue and a focus on shared values to address complex challenges collectively.
