A Saskatchewan artist has commemorated the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Grey Cup triumph with a unique tribute emblem. The Riders clinched a thrilling 25-17 victory against the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday night, securing their first Grey Cup championship since 2013.
In celebration of this achievement, Chris Chipak, an artist and illustrator from Red Pheasant Cree Nation near North Battleford, crafted a design inspired by an earlier Indigenous logo he had designed for the team, which has gained significant popularity. The new artwork showcases the Grey Cup alongside silhouettes of the team’s four other trophies.
In this design, a single feather emerges from the center of the trophy, illuminated by the radiant sun in the background. Below, a buffalo is depicted at the base, with its mane transforming into roots that extend across the ground. Chipak revealed that the idea for the design struck him while watching the championship game and witnessing fans proudly sporting his previous logo.
Previously, Chipak had developed the Indigenous Riders logo, featuring symbols like the buffalo, river, sun, and the iconic “S,” as part of the team’s Truth and Reconciliation initiative. The logo, released in full color earlier this year, has garnered significant fan support, particularly from Indigenous families.
Chipak emphasized that the new design aims to honor the team’s victory, the strong emotional connection with fans, and the unity fostered by sports across Saskatchewan. Additionally, he created a digital illustration of Riders running back A.J. Ouellette in anticipation of the Grey Cup game.
Overall, Chipak hopes that his latest design will serve as a lasting symbol of the historic win and the unifying power of sports in bringing communities together.
