“Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Erupts, Lava Fountain Reaches 400 Meters”

The most recent eruption episode of a Hawaii volcano produced a lava fountain that reached a height of 400 meters on Tuesday, leading to temporary closures at a national park and a section of a major highway due to falling volcanic debris, including ash.

Kilauea, situated on Hawaii’s Big Island, has been captivating both residents and tourists for over a year with its intermittent eruptions that sporadically shoot streams of lava high into the air.

The fountain activity, which commenced on Tuesday morning, marked the 43rd episode of the eruption since it began back in December 2024. Live footage displayed two bright-red lava fountains accompanied by smoke. The duration of the fountain activity remains uncertain as previous episodes have varied from lasting a few hours to a few days.

Similar to previous occurrences, the molten lava remained contained within Kilauea’s summit crater inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, posing no immediate threat to nearby residences or structures.

Kilauea volcano, renowned as one of the most active volcanic sites globally, ejected lava fountains soaring 400 meters high on Tuesday, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. Additionally, plumes of smoke from the eruption reached heights of 25,000 feet above sea level, as confirmed by the U.S. National Weather Service.

However, the lava fountains caused disruptions for nearby communities and a highway due to the falling volcanic debris and ash, known as tephra. This led to temporary closures at the national park surrounding the summit and a partial closure of Highway 11, a crucial route on the island, on both sides of the park.

Hawaii County authorities also established a shelter at a district gymnasium for residents and visitors affected by the road closure or falling tephra. Tom Callis, a county spokesperson, mentioned that there were no occupants at the shelter shortly after its opening.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued an ashfall warning in response to the eruption.

According to county officials, volcanic tephra can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Moreover, tephra can obstruct and result in issues with water catchment systems, which are prevalent in certain regions of the Big Island.

During a prior fountaining event, ashfall was so substantial that some communities required assistance from county civil defence personnel to clean up the ash that coated their residences, Callis highlighted.

Kilauea stands as one of the most active volcanoes globally.
