Fortnite, a widely popular online gaming platform, announced an increase in the price of its in-game currency, effective Thursday. This unusual step is seen as a response to the financial strain caused by ongoing antitrust battles involving its parent company, Epic Games, against tech giants Google and Apple.
Although Fortnite itself is free to play, it generates revenue through in-game transactions, particularly from the sale of its signature “V-Bucks” currency used by players to purchase various virtual items. The price adjustment will impact global users, with Canadian players now receiving fewer V-Bucks for the same amount of money due to the price hike.
Epic Games has been engaged in legal disputes with Google and Apple, accusing them of anti-competitive practices related to charging developers commissions on in-app purchases, which can be as high as 30%. In response to Epic’s attempts to circumvent these fees in 2020, both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store removed Fortnite swiftly.
While Google later reduced its fees and welcomed competition, Apple’s legal battle with Epic is ongoing. Despite initial rulings allowing alternative payment methods, Apple violated court orders, leading to unsuccessful appeals against these decisions.
Dean Takahashi, the editorial director at GamesBeat, commended Epic Games for its efforts in challenging antitrust issues but noted the financial sacrifice, including the loss of potential revenue from Fortnite on mobile platforms. The recent price adjustments may help offset some legal expenses, although it might take time for the company to regain its mobile user base.
The price increase for V-Bucks aims to provide consumers with less value for their money, a subtle tactic to manage costs without alienating players, according to industry experts. This move follows previous price adjustments in 2021 and 2023, reflecting ongoing financial considerations for Epic Games.
Despite reports of declining player hours on Fortnite in 2025, the game remains a significant revenue generator, attracting billions in annual income. The concept of “forever games” like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox, which offer endless gameplay experiences, remains popular due to their social elements and accessibility across various platforms.
While the price hike may not deter dedicated Fortnite players, concerns have been raised about Epic Games’ pricing strategy and its alignment with the company’s stated objectives in the antitrust battles. However, industry observers believe that the gaming community is likely to support Epic Games, given its overall reputation and commitment to player satisfaction.
