“Dabrowski and Mboko Secure Victory for Team Canada”

Doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and Toronto’s Victoria Mboko combined forces to guide Team Canada to victory against Denmark in the Group A playoffs of the Billie Jean King Cup held in Monterrey, Mexico. Dabrowski and Mboko, who had previously competed in a singles match just 20 minutes before the doubles clash, triumphed over Denmark’s Emma Kamper and Johanne Christine Svendsen with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in a 59-minute encounter, securing a 2-1 win in the best-of-three showdown.

During the match, the Canadian duo displayed a strong performance, achieving four aces and only one double fault while seizing 62 out of the 100 available points. They successfully converted three break points. Next, Dabrowski and Mboko are set to face off against Mexico in a decisive match on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, with the victor progressing to the 2026 qualifiers. Mexico had previously defeated Denmark 2-1 in their Group A playoff on Friday.

The upcoming Canada-Mexico clash will be broadcast live on CBC Sports and CBC Gem. Mboko, in a match lasting one hour and 24 minutes, defeated Christine Svendsen with a score of 7-5, 6-3, equalizing the best-of-three Group A playoff match at 1-1.

Reflecting on her performance, Mboko mentioned in an on-court interview that she focused on taking each point as it came, avoiding rushing herself, and maintaining self-belief despite Canada being behind 1-0. Noteworthy was Mboko’s 11 aces and an 86% first serve points won. In contrast, her opponent did not secure any aces, committed four double faults, and only managed to convert 63% of her first serves into points.

In terms of statistics, the Canadian team capitalized on five out of 12 break points, while their Danish counterparts won two out of five break points and successfully defended seven out of 12. Additionally, Cadence Brace from Toronto faced a tough three-set match against Rebecca Munk Mortensen in the initial encounter. Despite winning the first set 6-3, Brace eventually succumbed in the following two sets by narrow margins of 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) after a marathon three hours and 41 minutes of play.

Throughout the match, Brace recorded two aces and six double faults, while Munk Mortensen showcased four aces and eight double faults. Both players displayed a balanced performance in various statistical categories, with the Danish player holding a slight advantage in break points won (7-of-14), break points saved (15-of-23), and match points saved (9-2).
