Canadian Airlines Resume Mexico Flights Amid Safety Concerns

Canadian airlines are resuming operations to and from select Mexican destinations following disruptions due to recent violence in the region. However, travelers are facing decisions on whether to proceed with their flights.

Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, and Porter Airlines have restarted flights to and from Puerto Vallarta, with Flair Airlines set to resume its service to the resort town shortly. Global Affairs Canada has noted no new incidents since Monday but continues to advise sheltering in place in the western Mexican states of Jalisco and Nayarit following violent events triggered by the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.”

In response to inquiries about canceling trips to Mexico, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand suggested making decisions on a day-to-day basis despite signs of improvement in the situation. This uncertainty has left potential travelers like Cindy Redmile unsure about proceeding with her upcoming trip to Cancun with her daughter, as safety remains a top concern.

On the other hand, travelers such as Lauretta Prince from Fort St. James, B.C., remain less apprehensive. Prince and a friend had planned a trip to Puerto Vallarta with their granddaughters and are letting the youngsters determine whether they will proceed with the trip. Both Redmile and Prince have purchased travel insurance that allows them flexibility to rebook or receive travel credits if needed.

Regarding insurance coverage, Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada’s Executive Director, Will McAleer, emphasized the importance of purchasing policies that permit canceling for any reason. While airlines offer some rebooking flexibility, McAleer highlighted that certain dates may not be covered, especially for upcoming March break plans.

The Canadian government has advised exercising caution in some Mexican areas, with popular tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cozumel, and Mexico City only requiring heightened vigilance. Travel agency expert McKenzie McMillan compared the caution level to that of Italy due to similar terrorism risks in Europe.

Despite security concerns in various Mexican cities over the weekend, most incidents were concentrated in Puerto Vallarta, while other destinations like Cancun maintained normal operations. McMillan reassured travelers heading to these areas that current circumstances do not warrant significant worry.

McAleer recommended that travelers with upcoming Mexico trips consult their airline or tour operator to explore available options. Prince, for instance, is staying informed through her travel agent and contacts in Puerto Vallarta before finalizing her decision, leaning towards proceeding with the trip for her granddaughters’ special celebration.
