“Calgary Teen Faces Charges for AI Image Manipulation”

A teenager in Calgary faces multiple criminal charges for reportedly using AI technology to manipulate images of teenage girls from various local high schools in a sexual manner. Authorities executed a search warrant at the teen’s residence on November 13, confiscating two cellphones, a tablet, and a laptop as part of the investigation conducted by the child exploitation unit of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT). The inquiry was initiated in October following a tip received by ALERT’s ICE division regarding the dissemination of child sexual abuse materials on social media platforms.

The accused teenager allegedly employed AI techniques to exploit teenage girls attending different high schools within the Calgary vicinity. To safeguard the victims’ identities, law enforcement has chosen not to disclose the name of the perpetrator or the schools involved. Support services have been extended to the affected individuals, while the public is urged to immediately report any instances of encountering the images online and refrain from sharing them further.

The 17-year-old has been formally charged with offenses related to creating, possessing, and disseminating child sexual abuse and exploitation materials, in addition to criminal harassment. Staff Sgt. Mark Auger of ALERT ICE emphasized that under the revised Criminal Code of Canada, “child sexual abuse and exploitation material” now encompasses images or videos depicting individuals under 18 years engaged in explicit sexual activities, replacing the term “child pornography.”

Auger could not ascertain whether there was a specific link between the accused and the targeted girls, nor confirm the selection process utilized. He underscored the severity of such actions, emphasizing that this behavior constitutes a serious criminal offense rather than a mere prank or form of bullying. Auger highlighted the increasing prevalence of such incidents due to advancements in technology accessibility.

The accused has been released under specific court-ordered conditions, including restrictions on interacting with individuals under 16 years, unless incidental through educational or occupational settings, and limitations on owning internet-accessible devices except for essential work or educational purposes. The next court hearing is scheduled for January 8, 2026.
