“British Columbia Premier Maintains Trade Countermeasures”

British Columbia Premier David Eby has stated that there will be no new retaliatory measures against the United States following the imposition of an additional tariff on softwood lumber. Eby emphasized the importance of maintaining existing countermeasures in place during an interview on “Rosemary Barton Live,” aired on Sunday. These measures include the removal of American alcohol from British Columbia-run liquor stores and the exclusion of U.S. companies from public procurement. Eby affirmed that these restrictions will persist until a resolution is reached in discussions with American counterparts.

In response to the recent 10 percent tariff imposed by the U.S. on Canadian lumber, Eby urged the federal government to intervene and support forestry workers facing the impact of these tariffs. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly indicated that support for the softwood lumber sector, including funding facilitated through banks with backing from the Business Development Bank of Canada, is forthcoming. Eby stressed the urgency of this support, emphasizing the immediate need for financial assistance to prevent further job losses and operational disruptions in the forestry sector.

Andy Rielly, the board chair of the Independent Wood Processors Association of British Columbia, expressed concerns over the critical situation faced by small and medium-sized lumber companies in the region. He emphasized the importance of preserving these companies, highlighting their significant contribution to the forest business in British Columbia.

Amidst the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the U.S., there have been indications of discord within Team Canada regarding the focus and response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Eby voiced concerns about the perceived emphasis on provinces like Ontario and Quebec by federal leaders, potentially overshadowing issues specific to British Columbia. However, Eby emphasized the importance of unity among all premiers under Team Canada, acknowledging that disagreements are natural but should not detract from the collective goal of strengthening the nation’s economy.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford called on the federal government to take a strong stance in trade negotiations with the U.S., while Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of ongoing bilateral talks for resolving trade disputes rather than escalating with additional retaliatory tariffs. Carney highlighted the need for dialogue and negotiation in addressing trade challenges between the two countries.
