Brazil Triumphs in Penalty Shootout to Reach U-17 World Cup Semifinals

Brazil emerged victorious over Canada in the FIFA women’s under-17 World Cup quarterfinals, securing the win through a penalty shootout in Rabat, Morocco. The shootout ended 5-4 in favor of Brazil after Gabi Pusch, Gi Iseppe, Kaylane, Pepe, and Andreyna successfully converted their penalty kicks against Canadian goalkeeper Khadijah Cisse.

Despite efforts by Chloe Taylor, Amy Medley, Naomi Lofthouse, and Reed Tingley, who scored for Canada, Brazil’s goalkeeper Ana Morganti denied Bridget Mutipula’s attempt, ultimately sealing Brazil’s victory. The match remained scoreless after 90 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout.

Throughout the game, Brazil displayed a more aggressive offense, outshooting Canada 22-6 (with 7-2 shots on target). Canada, known for its strong performance in the tournament, struggled to break through Brazil’s defense after dominating in earlier matches.

Following this result, Brazil advanced to face defending champion North Korea in the semifinals. In upcoming quarterfinal matches, France will play against the Netherlands, while Mexico will face Italy.

This marked Canada’s fifth appearance in the quarterfinals out of eight under-17 championship appearances. Previous semifinal appearances include a fourth-place finish in 2018. Brazil, on the other hand, had never reached the semifinals in its three previous quarterfinal appearances.

Both teams made significant lineup changes, with Brazil making a strong start but facing turnovers. The match also saw a disputed play that was reviewed by the referee, with Brazil maintaining the lead in shots on target.

As the tournament progresses, the competition intensifies, with teams vying for a spot in the final stages.
