“Bo Bichette Declines Blue Jays’ Offer, Hits Free Agency”

Bo Bichette rejects the Toronto Blue Jays’ qualifying offer, opting to explore offers on the open market after his seven-year tenure with the team. While Bichette may still return to Toronto, the Blue Jays will need to compete with other teams to retain his services for the upcoming season. Qualifying offers, used to provide draft-pick compensation for teams losing eligible free agents, were declined by nine players this year. Among them, Bichette and others like Kyle Tucker and Kyle Schwarber turned down the offers.

On the other hand, four players, including Shota Imanaga and Gleyber Torres, accepted the qualifying offers, set at $22.025 million for the 2026 season based on the average salary of the top 125 MLB players. Bichette, who showcased a strong performance throughout the season, suffered a knee injury towards the end but returned to play in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite hitting a crucial home run in Game 7, the Blue Jays fell short in a thrilling extra-innings defeat to the Dodgers, who clinched the championship.

Following the close World Series loss, Toronto faces heightened expectations to strive for a return to the Fall Classic next year. Bichette, alongside other free agents like Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer, remains a priority for the Blue Jays in the off-season. While notable free agent signings have been scarce across the league, Canadian player Josh Naylor secured a significant five-year, $92.5 million deal with the Seattle Mariners after an impressive performance against the Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series. Naylor’s signing stands out in an otherwise quiet early off-season for free agent deals.
