The first season of the Northern Super League is coming to an end after approximately seven months since its commencement. The championship game will take place at Toronto’s BMO Field on Saturday. Diana Matheson, one of the league’s co-founders, expressed her excitement and acknowledged the hard work put in by various stakeholders to make this season successful.
The final match between AFC Toronto and Vancouver Rise FC aims to fill the lower bowl at BMO Field, with favorable weather conditions expected. AFC Toronto led the regular season standings, finishing with a record of 16 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses, while Vancouver secured the third position with 11 wins, 8 draws, and 6 losses.
The game will be televised nationally on CBC and live-streamed on CBC Sports and CBC Gem at 1:30 p.m. ET. The teams had an equal share of victories during their regular-season encounters, each winning two matches and drawing one.
Matheson described the inaugural season as a great success, with over 275,000 attendees witnessing players from 19 different countries. The league has received positive feedback from fans and stakeholders, inspiring plans for expansion and growth in the future.
International interest in the league is growing, with discussions about adding a seventh team in 2027. Matheson highlighted Canada’s appeal to global investors interested in women’s professional sports. The league’s strong performance and competitive numbers have drawn attention from outside capital.
Looking ahead, the focus is on enhancing the sport’s infrastructure, particularly with the hope that the 2026 World Cup will encourage collaboration between the private and public sectors to develop soccer facilities. The season will culminate with the presentation of the Diana B. Matheson Cup to the championship-winning team, a moment Matheson anticipates with a mix of excitement and surrealism.
