A couple from Hamilton found solace and support through an athletes advocacy group after raising concerns about their son’s hockey team in 2024. The parents, who remained anonymous for their son’s privacy, reported incidents of bullying and sexual misconduct involving multiple players on an under-14 AA Stoney Creek Warriors hockey team. Following a confidential investigation, several players and coaches received suspensions ranging from one to seven games for psychological, physical, and sexual maltreatment, bullying, and harassment.
Dissatisfied with the lenient punishments, the family appealed the decision. An arbitrator from the Sports Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada intervened, imposing probation periods on six players and two assistant coaches, while suspending the head coach for six months. The minor hockey association assured that individuals involved, aside from the complainant and their family, were no longer associated with the team.
Amid their struggle to secure legal representation, the family was advised to reach out to Athletes Empowered, a Canadian non-profit supporting athletes who have faced abuse. The organization, led by Amelia Cline, a lawyer and former elite gymnast, provided valuable guidance during the family’s search for legal assistance. Cline highlighted that the family’s experience was regrettably common in maltreatment complaints, with victims often facing backlash and hostility for speaking out.
Cline emphasized the need for cultural and structural changes in sports, citing the inadequate systems in place to handle complaints effectively. She stressed the importance of recognizing and addressing abuse promptly, advocating for more stringent measures to combat such misconduct. Athletes Empowered recently introduced the Keep Me Safe program, aimed at educating adults on identifying, addressing, and reporting abuse in sports.
Efforts to enhance accountability and transparency in addressing maltreatment complaints continue to evolve within the sports community. The call for a more proactive and supportive approach towards victims of abuse remains at the forefront of initiatives like Athletes Empowered.
