A young child sustained severe injuries following a coyote attack at a playground in Whitby, Ontario, where multiple sightings have recently occurred, according to Durham police. The incident took place on Sunday evening at Vanier Park, where a two-year-old boy was attacked by a coyote, biting him on the face. The child’s guardian and bystanders managed to scare the coyote away, and the boy was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after, authorities responded to reports of another distressed coyote near Harriet and Annes streets, which was safely removed with no reported injuries. Durham police, in collaboration with the Town of Whitby, local animal services, and the Durham Region Health Department, are investigating the incidents, monitoring coyote activity, and working to prevent future encounters.
Recent coyote incidents have been on the rise in Durham, with a previous incident involving a child being bitten near a forested tree line. Police issued a public advisory urging caution in public spaces, especially for pedestrians and pet owners. Whitby has recorded 96 coyote sightings in the last month alone, as indicated by the town’s online dashboard.
Various communities in and around Toronto have also faced increased coyote sightings, with instances of attacks on children prompting public warnings. Authorities recommend maintaining a safe distance from coyotes, supervising children outdoors, and keeping pets on leashes. It is advised to follow guidance in areas with coyote sightings, avoid these places when possible, and eliminate food attractants like unsecured garbage to mitigate encounters. If encountering a coyote, individuals should stay calm, make loud noises, and slowly back away without running.
Residents are encouraged to report any future coyote sightings to animal services to ensure public safety.
