Canadian Marathoners Disappointed by Split from World Championships

A group of top Canadian marathon runners expressed disappointment over World Athletics’ recent decision to separate the marathon event from the World Athletics Championships starting in 2030. Former track athlete turned marathoner, Malindi Elmore, highlighted concerns about the move, emphasizing the significance of representing one’s country at major championships. She criticized the decision, calling it a move to sideline the marathon event.

The new World Marathon Championship, set to debut in fall 2030, aims to provide a dedicated platform for marathoners. The decision to split the marathon from the main championships is driven by factors like climate change, as extreme summer temperatures in some host cities make the event challenging for elite athletes.

Athletics Canada’s CEO, Mathieu Gentes, acknowledged both the benefits and drawbacks of the upcoming World Marathon Championship. While the move aims to address scheduling conflicts and enhance the marathon experience, some athletes like Cam Levins are concerned about the potential impact on team camaraderie and support.

Canadian marathoners, including Ben Preisner, also shared mixed feelings about the change. While the prospect of cooler fall temperatures is appealing, concerns about logistical support and team dynamics remain. Despite assurances from Athletics Canada, athletes like Elmore and Levins question the rationale behind separating men’s and women’s events in the new championship.

As preparations continue for the inaugural World Marathon Championship in 2030, the running community awaits further details on how the event will affect both elite athletes and mass participation runners.
