Lil Nas X shared details about his bipolar disorder diagnosis and time in rehab on Instagram following an incident involving Los Angeles police officers last summer. He revealed that he had spent the past few months in rehab, focused on his mental health, and was now actively seeking professional help, including therapy and medication.
Addressing the challenges he faces as a Black, gay, bipolar individual, the singer humorously remarked on the difficulty level of his life. Despite the struggles, he expressed optimism about his current state, mentioning his improved well-being, creative freedom, and anticipation for new music, which would mark his first release in over a year.
Notably absent from his social media post was any direct mention of the Los Angeles charges stemming from the incident. Months earlier, Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, faced allegations of attacking police officers while nearly naked on a street in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley. The ensuing criminal complaint stated that three officers were injured during the confrontation.
After spending three days in jail, Lil Nas X was released on bail and entered a plea of not guilty to multiple felony counts, including battery on a police officer and resisting an executive officer. Following these events, the artist shared a video online expressing his distress but also projecting confidence in overcoming the situation.
Subsequently, Lil Nas X was granted entry into a mental health diversion program by a judge, contingent upon his adherence to treatment and the law for two years. This decision was made based on the court’s recognition of his bipolar disorder as a contributing factor to the incident, which was deemed uncharacteristic of his usual behavior.

Controversial career
Since rising to fame in 2019 with the hit song Old Town Road, Lil Nas X has experienced a mix of praise and controversy. The track sparked debates over genre boundaries and faced scrutiny over its classification in country music charts.
Subsequent collaborations and chart-topping success followed, including a remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus that dominated the Billboard Hot 100. Amid his musical achievements, Lil Nas X also made headlines for coming out as gay and addressing homophobia in the hip-hop industry.
However, his career has not been without its share of criticism, particularly due to provocative marketing campaigns like the “Satan shoes” release and controversial music videos. Despite the controversies, his creative expression through albums like Montero and Days Before Dreamboy has continued to resonate with fans.
