British Columbia’s Jobs Minister, Ravi Kahlon, revealed that a local group has expressed interest in acquiring the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team. This development follows a recent offer from a U.S. entity to purchase and relocate the team to Las Vegas. Kahlon shared the news with reporters in Victoria, describing it as a positive step for Whitecaps supporters and the province.
The prospective local bidders, who have been diligently preparing their bid for weeks, aim to keep the team in British Columbia. Kahlon, a devoted Whitecaps fan and season-ticket holder, confirmed that the group had contacted his office independently and was not seeking assistance from the government. He emphasized the seriousness of the local bidders’ intentions.
Meanwhile, a group led by billionaire Grant Gustavson made headlines by submitting a bid to Major League Soccer to acquire the Whitecaps and construct a soccer-specific stadium in Las Vegas. Gustavson, 30, hails from a prominent family background in the business world.
Kahlon stressed the importance of a prompt public announcement by the local bidders to ease the anxiety among Whitecaps fans. He expressed a strong desire for a local entity to step forward and ensure the team remains in the region. As discussions continue, various groups are exploring potential relocation options for the Whitecaps as MLS assesses the team’s future.
The Whitecaps have been on the market since 2024 due to ongoing challenges related to stadium control and revenue at B.C. Place, which is under provincial ownership. Despite engaging with numerous interested parties over the past year, the club has yet to receive a viable offer that would secure its future in British Columbia.
