“Blue Jays Drop Cricket Canada Partnership Amid Controversy”

Cricket Canada has encountered a setback as one of its significant partnerships for engaging new fans with the game has been discontinued, as per confirmation from the fifth estate. The Toronto Blue Jays informed via email that Cricket Canada will not be part of this year’s Cricket Day at the Park on May 23, although the event will proceed as planned.

The annual celebration, now in its fourth year, serves as a platform for fans of both baseball and cricket, aiming to introduce cricket to a broader audience. This decision follows an investigation by the fifth estate that revealed allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and match-fixing attempts within Cricket Canada, which the accused parties have denied.

Over the past three years, Cricket Canada’s national team players and officials have been prominently featured at the promotional event held at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. Notably, in 2024, Saad Bin Zafar, the then captain of Canada’s national men’s cricket team, threw the ceremonial first pitch.

Last year, the first 15,000 attendees at the stadium received a Blue Jays and Cricket Canada warm-up jacket. Cricket Canada mentioned in a statement to the fifth estate that they have collectively agreed to reduce their involvement in this year’s event to emphasize community and the overall experience.

The event, sponsored by TD Bank, did not address queries regarding Cricket Canada’s role but mentioned monitoring the organization’s efforts to enhance governance and leadership. The Blue Jays initiated the event in 2022 after consulting with Cricket Canada to engage South Asian and Caribbean audiences with baseball, complementing their exposure to cricket.

Despite Cricket Canada’s absence this year, the Blue Jays are committed to strengthening connections between fans of both sports. This year’s event will feature henna artists, Bhangra dancers, dhol drummers, and virtual reality cricket experiences. Additionally, the Jays will acknowledge the Ontario Cricket Academy for their youth cricket programs and host a baseball-cricket clinic in collaboration with various South Asian organizations.
