“Health Minister Threatens Resignation Over Medical Transport Delays”

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Health Minister, Lela Evans, has expressed her dissatisfaction with the state of medical transport delays in Northern Labrador, stating that she may resign from her position if improvements are not made. Evans urged individuals to consider legal action against her and the government regarding the delays faced by residents on Labrador’s north coast in accessing medical appointments in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The minister, who represents Torngat Mountains, highlighted the challenges faced by individuals trying to travel for medical purposes, with recent incidents leaving 94 passengers stranded and patients struggling to reach their destinations. Evans described the situation as insulting, upsetting, and unacceptable, noting that the transport provider had indicated that patient treatment was verging on racism.

In response, Medavie Health N.L. stated that they are collaborating with the health authority to enhance services, especially considering the weather and geographical obstacles in the region. The company acknowledged the delays experienced by approximately 90 patients in Happy Valley-Goose Bay due to adverse weather conditions over the weekend.

Evans emphasized the need for immediate action to address the ongoing delays and suggested that legal recourse against the government could be pursued if the situation persists. She expressed disappointment over the reduction in medical evacuation services for coastal Labrador under the previous government and criticized the deterioration of services since Medavie took over the contract.

The minister questioned the effectiveness of the provincial government in managing the healthcare system for Northern Labrador and called for urgent measures to be implemented to prevent further delays that deter individuals from seeking necessary medical treatment. Evans also hinted at seeking support directly from the federal government to address the issues faced by residents in Northern Labrador, likening their treatment to that of a “third-world country.”

Premier Tony Wakeham responded to Evans’ concerns by acknowledging her advocacy for improving healthcare services in the region and assured continued collaboration to enhance healthcare services for residents of northern Labrador. Wakeham praised Evans as a dedicated advocate and committed to working with her and the government team to meet the healthcare needs of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
